ProjectX API: the platform under TopstepX
ProjectX is the trading platform several futures prop firms white-label, and TopstepX is the best-known version. Its Gateway API is how a program places orders on those accounts.
Quanify routes orders to Tradovate and TopstepX accounts today. On TopstepX it sends market orders; other ProjectX-based firms are not connected yet.
The ProjectX Gateway API at a glance
A REST interface for actions plus a real-time hub for events. Access is by per-user API key, once the firm enables it for the account.
- Transport
- HTTPS REST for actions, a persistent real-time hub for events
- Auth
- Per-user API key exchanged for a session token that expires
- Identity
- Accounts are numeric ids; contracts are string ids resolved by search
- Orders
- Market, limit, stop, stop-limit, trailing stop; one account per request
- Events
- Order, position and trade updates per account you subscribe to
- Access
- Each firm decides whether its traders may connect a program
What takes the time when building on it
Placing an order is one call. The work is making that call safe on a funded account.
- Session lifecycle
- The token expires and the hub disconnects. Expiry and revocation need separate recovery paths.
- Contract search
- Contracts are found by search and the front month changes, so the id needs refreshing before expiry.
- Fills, not orders
- One order can fill in several pieces. Position logic keyed on the order id misses or double-counts partials.
- Firm rules
- Daily loss, consistency and news rules are enforced by the firm, not the API.
- Rate limits
- A burst that's fine on one account can lock out twenty, so orders to many accounts need pacing.
- Uptime
- The program has to stay connected whenever the market is open.
Where Quanify stands on ProjectX
Routing, sizing and copy logic are broker-neutral, and TopstepX accounts connect through the Gateway API with your username and an API key.
| Tradovate | ProjectX (TopstepX) | |
|---|---|---|
| Order routing | ✓ | Market orders |
| Copy Trader leader or follower | ✓ | Follower; leader not yet |
| Webhook strategies | ✓ | ✓ |
| Per-account multipliers | ✓ | Same as Tradovate |
| Sign-in | OAuth | API key |
TopstepX accounts can follow a Tradovate leader and run webhook strategies today. A TopstepX leader, limit and stop orders, and other ProjectX-based firms are not available yet.
Build on the ProjectX API, or use an executor
The API is approachable: plain REST calls, public docs and a first order in an afternoon. The items above take most of a month, and the program then has to stay up whenever the market is open.
If your strategy already fires alerts, what you need is an executor. If one exists for your broker, using it is usually faster than building one.
TopstepX APICommon questions
Short answers to what traders ask first. Anything else, the Help Center has it.
What is the ProjectX API?
The programming interface to the ProjectX trading platform, which TopstepX and several other prop-firm front ends are built on. It's REST for actions like placing orders, plus a real-time hub for order, fill and position events.
Is the TopstepX API the same as the ProjectX API?
Yes. TopstepX is Topstep's branded ProjectX platform, and its API is the ProjectX Gateway API. Whether an account may use it is Topstep's decision.
Does the ProjectX API allow copy trading?
The API can place orders on any account the key holds, so a program can copy between them. Whether you may is a firm rule, and firms often treat copying your own accounts differently from copying a third party. Check the current rulebook for the account.
Does Quanify support ProjectX or TopstepX today?
Yes, for TopstepX. Connect a TopstepX account with your username and an API key from TopstepX → Settings → API (it needs a ProjectX API subscription). Quanify sends market orders there. Topstep doesn't allow API trading on Live Funded accounts, and other ProjectX-based firms aren't connected yet.
Can I use TradingView alerts with the ProjectX API?
Not directly. TradingView posts a webhook, and something has to receive it, authenticate to the gateway, resolve the contract and place the order. That receiver is what an automation service does.
